Former Manchester United and Everton great Andrei Kanchelskis sang the praises of Aiden McGeadyiIn Russia yesterday. Kanchelskis, who urged McGeady to be bold and make the move to Moscow during the summer, sees many good qualities in McGeady. Kanchelskis is currently manager of Russian outfit FC Torpedo-ZIL Moscow.

Speaking in July, Kanchelskis stated “It’s different football when you play on these new pitches (the pitch at Spartak’s Luzhniki Stadium is synthetic) but the fact Spartak are willing to pay so much for McGeady shows how much they really want him.

“When that’s the case, why not go and play for Spartak Moscow? It’s important that the coach likes him as a player. The coach has said he likes him and he will be an important player if he signs.”

In a move that surprised some people, McGeady made the £9.5 million move to Spartak Moscow in early August. Kanchelskis already sees enough in the Irish winger to get very excited about.

Speaking yesterday, Kanchelskis stated, “I’m sure Aidan McGeady was well worth the price Spartak paid, they made an excellent decision.

“When McGeady arrived, the Spartak wing-play started to work. His contribution is not only limited to his own game, consider how Kombarov’s play has improved since Aiden’s arrival.

“Spartak have become a far more interesting team to watch.  Interesting, creative, play delivers wins, especially away from home.  This is why Spartak bought him.

“He is a very classy winger.  He is a fast, sharp, boy, who fears no one, can dribble and deliver excellent passes.  Like all players from Britain he’s a fighter.”

This can be considered glowing praise from one of the Premierships greatest ever wingers, a player McGeady no doubt had the highest respect for.

Kanchelskis did go on to state that McGeady will certainly need time to settle in both the Russian league and in Moscow itself.  However he is certain that McGeady will only improve as the season progresses.

So far McGeady has represented Spartak twice. He made had a very impressive debut in a 2-1 victory over Saturn. McGeady provided the assist to Welliton for the winning goal. Speaking after the match, McGeady said ” The main thing was we won, It was nice that I helped with one of the goals but credit must go to Welliton. He’s a great striker.”

McGeady followed up this display with another very decent performance in Spartak’s victory in their clash with Marseille.

In their most recent game, Spartak defeated Spartak Nalchik 2-0. Again McGeady was his dependable self. The improvement in his defensive game was very evident throughout.

After a difficult start to the season, Spartak have finally regained some form. They occupy 6th in the Russian Premier League, and have won 4 of their last 5 games. Spartak’s next fixture will be this coming Friday, when they host Amkar Perm. With Kancelskis praise ringing in his ear, MakГи⌂и will hope to keep up his good form for Spartak and prove that the move to Russia has been beneficial.
