We’re all for promoting lower league players here at GreenScene (such as John Thompson for Notts County), so it’s wonderful to hear that two Irish players have been named in the nPower League One Team of the Week for the 20th of September 2010.

Defender Alan Sheehan of Swindon and midfielder James O’Connor of Sheffield Wednesday were both named in the team of the week.

Alan Sheehan has had a good week. He celebrated his 24th birthday on Tuesday, and was named in the League One Team of the Week five days later. The Athlone man has appeared five times for the Ireland under-21s, and even scored from a free kick. Sheehan signed for Swindon on loan from Leeds United last season, before signing a full-time contract in the summer. Before Leeds, he was with Leicester, and has spent time on loan at Mansfield, Crewe, and Oldham. He has only played two games this season for Swindon, but is already off the mark, scoring against Walsall in a 2-1 victory on Saturday.

James O’Connor has been with the Owls since 2008, after moving from Burnley on a free transfer. He’s played more than 100 games with two separate clubs (Stoke and Burnley), and is only a handful of games away from reaching the same mark with Wednesday. O’Connor also spent time at West Brom, and was even capped for the Ireland under-21 side. He’s played 7 league games and 3 cup games this season, and has scored three goals – including one against Plymouth on Saturday which propelled him into the team of the week.

League One Team of the Week:
Mark Cousins (Colchester)
Kieran Lee (Oldham)
Mathias Doumbe (MK Dons)
Jamie McCoumbe (Huddersfield)
Alan Sheehan (Swindon)
Scott Arfield (Huddersfield)
Carl Fletcher (Plymouth)
James O’Connor (Sheff Wed)
Jeff Hughes (Bristol Rovers)
Lee Hughes (Notts County)
Vincent Pericard (Swindon)
