Spotlight: Anthony Flood
Following on from last weeks article concerning Pat Walker, the Irish manager who has proved such a success in Scandanavia, this article shall focus on a player currently plying his trade in the Swedish Allsvenskan. 25 year old Dubliner, Anthony Flood made the decision to up roots from Ireland and join Örebro SK in July of this year. Örebro SK were managed by Pat Walker from 2005 until 2007.
Followers of the Airtricity League will be well aware of Flood. He has enjoyed quite a chequered career in Ireland, making the breakthrough at St. Pats. Two loan spells followed at Athlone Town and Shamrock Rovers. Flood departed the Saints in December 2006 to join Dundalk. However things did not go to plan at Dundalk, and Flood’s contract was terminated for what was described as a ‘breach of discipline’. After a search for a new club, Flood jumped at the chance to join Shelbourne, and he can consider his time there a success, netting 37 goals in 76 games. Flood’s last club in Ireland was Galway United whom he joined in March of this year. In was in July when Flood was given the chance to really spread his wings.
Anthony Flood was initially offered a contract with Scottish outfit St Mirren and was very close to joining until receiving word that a team in Sweden were showing an interest. Flood joined Örebro SK on 28th July 2010. Managing Director of Örebro SK, Lennart Sjögren said that “We had seen him play in Ireland and we see him as an interesting alternative. We felt he was exciting enough to take him here. He has the features we need today”.
So far Flood has been reduced to a squad player. He has been in the Örebro SK squad 5 times, each time a substitute. The fact that he joined in the middle of the Swedish season has been an obvious handicap. Örebro SK are currently having a very good season, currently third and have secured 10 points from their last 5 games. Flood will be hoping to be involved in Örebro SK next game at home to Kalmar, another club that Pat Walker has managed in the past. Only time will tell if Flood’s adventure in Sweden will prove to be a success.
