The FIFA World Rankings for October 2010 have been released. Following a draw with Slovakia, the Republic of Ireland have moved up one position to 32nd in the world. More significantly, Russia’s 3-2 victory at the Aviva Stadium and their 1-0 away win in Macedonia sees them jump an enormous fifteen places to tenth.

Ireland’s other Group B rivals Slovakia move down 4 places to 20th following the draw with Ireland in Zilina and a 3-1 loss in Armenia. On the other side of that surprise result, Armenia have climbed from 105th to 60th, their highest ever position in the FIFA World Rankings. FYR of Macedonia also move up one place to 70th, while Andorra are stuck at 202nd.

The top two positions have not changed, with World Cup winners and runners-up Spain and Netherlands. Brazil have reclaimed third spot from Germany, who move down one place. Positions 5-9 remain unchanged, with Argentina, England, Uruguay, and Portugal all standing their ground. Croatia also move into the top 10, up two places to 9th. As mentioned earlier, Ireland’s Group B rivals Russia have taken the final top ten position.

After drawing impressively with Italy, Northern Ireland move up four places to 41st. Scotland have been dumped out of the top 50, down ten places to 57, while Wales have also slipped down the rankings from 84th to 104th – their lowest position since 2001. Brian Kerr’s Faroe Islands have climbed again, up to 133rd, and catching up quickly on the declining Welsh side.
