Weekend Review 16th-17th October
THE GOOD
Seamus Coleman – Everton
Terrorised Liverpool at times in his Merseyside debut. Got his chance on the right wing rather than his usual right back position. Instrumental during the first goal when his great work resulted in an assist for Tim Cahill. For one so young and inexperienced, he is settling into Premiership football brilliantly.
James McCarthy – Wigan
Yet another great game for McCarthy, who is making a bigger name for himself in the Premiership with each passing week. Great work for the second Wigan goal, and also defended admirably during the second half onslaught. The thought of him in Ireland’s midfield is quite exciting.
Kevin O’Connor – Brentford
Instrumental in Brenford’s 3-0 demolition away to Tranmere. The Brentford captain, who has over 350 appearances for the club, scored twice and was excellent throughout.
Keiren Westwood
The future Ireland goalkeeper in waiting was a big factor in Coventry escaping from Portman Road with three points. Ipswich is a difficult place to go to and get anything, so this was an impressive win for Coventry. Many Irish players were in both squads but Westwood stood out as he had a number of very impressive saves towards the end. A great way to mark his 250th appearance.
THE BAD
Keith Treacy
Has been playing superbly this season, but gave away a penalty and was sent off in a game he will no doubt want to forget.

The Coleman conundrum. He has been excellent ever since he burst onto the scene but the majority of his appearances this season for Everton have been in midfield. Himself and McCarthy deserve starts next month. We have ample time to worry about men-tal-i-ty and so·lid·i·ty in Spring. We should use the Norway game purely for experimental reasons but alas.
