Cillian Sheridan back on form for CSKA Sofia

Like Stoke City’s Jon Walters yesterday, Cillian Sheridan was resigned to just a cameo role for CSKA Sofia away to Sliven in the Bulgarian Cup. Sheridan was on the bench again for Sofia, but will be delighted with the impact he had after coming on in the 86th minute for Brazilian striker Michel Platini.

Sliven had opened the scoring at the Hadzhi Dimitar Stadium, with a goal from Milen Vasilev on 23 minutes, and went in at the break comfortably leading 1-0. However, CSKA Sofia fought back strongly in the second half, with goals from Todor Yanchev and Spas Delev turning things around. It was still a one-goal-game when Sheridan was brought on with less than five minutes to go, and the Cavan native killed the game off in stoppage time with a gorgeous chip over the advancing Georgi Georgiev.

CSKA Sofia are now through to the third round of the cup, which will be played on the weekend of the 4th of December. The winner of the Bulgarian Cup will qualify for the third qualifying round of next year’s Europa League.
