Gavin Gunning in Bury loan switch

Blackburn Rovers defender Gavin Gunning has signed for League Two side Bury on a one-month loan in order to get more first team experience

19 year old Gavin Gunning has yet to play for the Blackburn Rovers senior side, but gained 27 appearances during two loan spells away from Ewood last season. He joined Tranmere for a month, playing six games, and then in January moved to Rotterham United for the rest of the season, playing 21 league games. He also played in three cup games for the Millers, as his initial one-month emergency loan was extended after he made an immediate impact. Gunning has been capped for Ireland at both under-19 and under-21 level.

With regular defender Ben Futcher joining Oxford United, Gunning could immediately find himself in the Bury first team, under League Two manager of the month Alan Knill. “I knew he [Futcher] was going last week but he wasn’t going until we got somebody in as cover,” Knill told reporters yesterday”  The cover arrived today with Gavin Gunning joining us.

“He’s a good player, he has experience at his level after loans to Tranmere and Rotherham.  He’s tall, athletic and fits the bill in what we are trying to do.  I’ve told him that we are doing well at the moment and that he isn’t going to go straight into the team, but if he gets the opportunity and does well, he will stay there.  He will provide cover at centre back and possibly even left back. He’s another young player that wants to do well and we hope he will be a decent signing for us.”

Bury take on Stockport later today.
