Doolin names Ireland u19 squad to face Croatia
With Giovanni Trapattoni’s announcement of the Irish side to face Wales in the Carling Nations Cup, Paul Doolin’s naming of the Republic of Ireland under 19 squad to play a friendly double-header against Croatia received far less media attention this week.
Doolin’s under 19s play Croatia away in Umag on February 8th and 10th, providing a further chance for the Irish youths boss to assess his players ahead of the Elite Phase of UEFA Under 19 European Championship qualifying in May. Doolin has made wholesale changes to the squad who beat Luxembourg and Bulgaria in October to qualify for the second stage.
“Croatia, like us, have qualified for the Elite phase, so will provide two good tests for our squad,” Doolin said on Tuesday. “I’m familiar with the group of players which played in the UEFA first phase qualifiers and these matches are about giving other lads their chance of impressing.
“The bad weather over the last few months meant lots of club fixtures were postponed but this is a great opportunity to see players within our own set-up. They are all doing well at their clubs and deserve their opportunity at this level.
The squad is heavily-England based, with only Conor Murphy of Shamrock Rovers getting a League of Ireland call-up. Matt Doherty of Wolves also gets his first nod at under 19 level.
