MK Dons sign Shaun Williams on free transfer

Milton Keynes Dons have confirmed the signing of Shaun Williams on a free transfer. The 24-year-old midfielder had been unattached since being released by Sporting Fingal earlier this year.

With Sporting Fingal unable to find funding or financial backers, the club ceased all operations in January, and withdrew their application to play in the League of Ireland. As a result, all their players were released, and were forced to find new clubs. Former Ireland under 23 international Shaun Williams was one such player, and had trials with Burnley and Everton, as well as offers from Glasgow Celtic. Yesterday, however, the Dubliner signed for MK Dons.

“I am delighted to have captured the services of Shaun,” Dons boss Karl Robinson said yesterday. “He was sought after by a number of clubs and it is terrific news that he chose a move to MK Dons for his progression.

“At 24 he matches the criteria we are looking for, he is young, ambitious and hungry for success, just like the football club. To be named young player of the year by his fellow professionals shows he is rated in the game and emphasises what we as a management staff already know, we have added another quality player to the club.”

Williams’s career so far has seen him play for Drogheda United, Dundalk, Finn Harps, and most recently Sporting Fingal, making 95 league appearances and scoring 26 goals. In 2009, he lifted the FAI Cup, while in 2010 he was named PFAI Young Player of the Year, and captained Sporting Fingal in the Europa League against Portuguese side Martimo.

With the transfer window closed and Williams having played for Fingal late last year, MK Dons have sought clarification from the Football League as to whether he is eligible to feature this season in League One.
