Cillian Sheridan on trial with Seattle Sounders

Following in the footsteps of Republic of Ireland international Caleb Folan, fellow striker Cillian Sheridan is looking into a move to the US Major League.

Sheridan played the first half for Seattle Sounders reserves against Vancouver Whitecaps yesterday, and even scored the opening goal, as he looks for a move following a disappointing season with Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia.

“He’s been a little bit tired from the long flight, but you can see tonight some of the things he offers” said Sounders technical director Chris Henderson said. “He’s good in front of the box, and (he was taken off at half time) to make sure he’s fresh and we can take a good look this week. We don’t want to make a decision after one practice and half a game, but it’s good to see that he’s connecting with players, and I think tonight has been good.”

Fansite Sounder at Heart writer Jeremiah Oshan has high hopes for the Cavanman. “Assuming there is some truth to this, it would make some sense. Sheridan is young (22), big (6-foot-5) and has a pretty decent scoring touch (.34 goals per 90 minutes in Europa League and the top division Bulgarian league this year). If it’s really more of a loan deal, it’s doubtful he’d count as a Designated Player, which could still allow for another bigger-name signing.”

Before moving to Bulgaria, Sheridan had spent four years at Celtic, and during that time he faced Sounders in a friendly match. At just 22, and with three senior international caps to his name, Sheridan still has the potential to be a great striker, and hopefully a move to a club where he will get first team action will see him regain his place in the Irish squad.
