Republic of Ireland U19 squad named for Euro 2011
Republic of Ireland under 19 boss Paul Doolin has named his eighteen man squad for the 2011 UEFA European Under 19 Championship finals later this month in Romania.
Doolin has very much stuck to the squad who helped him qualify from the Elite Stage in May, adding only Southend United’s Kane Ferdinand to the tight-knit group.
Speaking at the squad announcement on Tuesday, Doolin spoke of the tough decisions he had to make selecting his squad. “Picking just 18 players for this squad for the UEFA Championship finals has been an incredibly difficult task,” he said, “but I believe that the players selected are here on merit and our main priority must now be our opening game against Greece on July 20.
“We will approach the finals like any other qualification phase and first aim to get out of the group and take this championship one game at a time. Greece’s record in the tournament to date is very impressive given that they qualified from a group which contained France, Slovakia and Belarus without dropping any points. I have been studying DVDs of Greece from those games and we must ensure that our players are prepared for the challenges that they will face in the finals.
“Preparation for the tournament in Bucharest is key and the seven day training camp in Rome prior to the finals will be an ideal setting in terms of acclimatisation and getting the players together as a group.”
Squad:
Goalkeepers – Aaron McCarey (Wolves), Sean McDermott (Arsenal)
Defenders – Matt Doherty (Wolves), John Egan (Sunderland), Anthony O’Connor (Blackburn), Joe Shaughnessy (Aberdeen), Declan Walker (Wrexham), Derrick Williams (Aston Villa)
Midfielders – Samir Carruthers (Aston Villa), Kane Ferdinand (Southend), Anthony Forde (Wolves), Jeff Hendrick (Derby), Kevin Knight (Unattached), Sean Murray (Watford), Eoin Wearen (West Ham)
Forwards – Conor Murphy (Bray), John O’ Sullivan (Blackburn), Connor Smith (Watford)

Brady, Duffy & McGinty?
Kane Ferdinand ahead of Robbie Brady. Sad times.
Ferdinand plays in a different position to Brady, not exactly ahead of him. Doolin stuck with the squad that qualified, which is fair enough. He should stay quiet on players not picked tho
He’s sticking with the squad that obtained results such as a 3-0 victory over Italy, which is fair enough to my mind. Hopefully Brady and the other missing lads are strong enough characters that they’ll get over the snub soon enough and we won’t have more Stephen Ireland type grudge situations on our hands.
Brady was’nt snubbed, he had no intention of playing. He has no time for Doolin or King, Dooling tried everything he could to contact Brady with no luck.
