Eunan O’Kane waiting on international clearance

Torquay United midfielder Eunan O’Kane has been placed on the standby list for Noel King’s Republic of Ireland under-21 squad as he waits for international clearance.

O’Kane is unlikely to feature for King’s side against Liechtenstein in Euro 2013 qualifiers this weekend, as both FIFA and the FAI await paperwork from the Irish Football Association regarding his conversion from Northern Ireland to the Republic. “As far as I know, everything has been done at FIFA’s end, but they are just awaiting some paperwork from Northern Ireland,” O’Kane told the South Devon Western Morning News.

O’Kane is disappointed to miss the Liechtenstein game, and will focus on Torquay’s League Two match with Bradford should clearance not come in time. “Hopefully, there’ll be other games for me down the road [with Ireland],” O’Kane said. “We [Torquay] have an important League match at Bradford City this weekend, anyway.”

The 21 year old Derryman has become a first team regular since joining Torquay from Coleraine last summer, after impressing on trial. He has lined out for Northern Ireland from under-16 to under-21 level, but decided to convert to the Republic of Ireland a couple of months ago.
