Trapattoni names squad for Estonia playoff
Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has named a 26 man squad to face Estonia next month in Euro 2012 playoffs.
Amazingly, the squad includes just three fit forwards: Simon Cox, Jon Walters, and Kevin Doyle. Of that trio, Doyle is banned from the first game after being sent off in the 2-1 win against Armenia earlier this month. LA Galaxy hope that Irish captain Robbie Keane will recover in time to participate in their own playoff campaign, while Shane Long’s club manager Roy Hodgson is doubtful of his player’s chances of recovery. Leeds United’s Andy Keogh can play either on the wing or up front, and has always been a favourite of Trapattoni’s since scoring against Serbia back in 2008.
Trapattoni has also recalled Darron Gibson and Paul McShane, though neither is expected to start on November 11th in Tallinn. Kevin Kilbane misses out again, despite Stephen Ward serving a suspension last time out against Armenia.
“There is no room for complacency as we prepare for our two games next month,” Trapattoni told reporters. “We will remember that Estonia have as much right to be in the playoffs as ourselves. These games will be a huge challenge for us, and we must maintain the correct mentality from start to finish.”
