Cian Hughton on trial with Malmo
Former Republic of Ireland under 21 defender Cian Hughton has joined Swedish giants Malmö FF on a week-long trial.
The former Tottenham Hotspur youth and Lincoln City defender is the son of Birmingham City boss Chris Hughton, who was capped 53 times for Ireland. Hughton has been without a club since May 2011, but has been on trial at Vancouver Whitecaps, Bristol Rovers, and Milton Keynes Dons.
The 23 year old told Swedish newspaper Sydvenskan that he has enjoyed his trial so far at the club, and he hopes to do enough in the friendly game against Mjallby to earna contract. “I want nothing more than to stay here,” Hughton said. “We’ll have to talk after the games against Mjällby, the coach and me. So we’ll see what happens. If I get the chance, I’ll take it. I’ve made up my mind.”
Hughton also spoke highly of the team and the league itself. “There are players here of a high standard, many of the Premier League class. I can not imagine a better opportunity outside of England.”
