Hibernian sign Irish duo O’Donovan and Doherty

Hibernian manager Pat Fenlon has completed loan moves for former League of Ireland duo Roy O’Donovan and Matt Doherty.

Fenlon managed Wolves and Republic of Ireland under-21 defender at Bohemians before he moved to Molineux in 2010, and the move should help Doherty get more first team experience. He made his Premier League debut for Wolves in September, but has only featured in cup games since. “I’m excited about playing for Hibs and about working with Pat again,” Doherty said last night. “He has given me a chance to get some game-time and I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully playing first team football week in, week out will benefit me in many ways. My aim is to do well as I can for Hibs and then go back and challenge for a first team place at Wolves next season.”

Former Cork City striker Roy O’Donovan also made the switch to Hibs from Coventry on deadline day, having failed to find the net for the Championship club in the last two seasons. However, he’s a proven goalscorer, with 31 goals in 74 league games for Cork, and 9 in 15 while on loan at Hartlepool in 2010. He was overlooked by Steve Staunton for the then Republic of Ireland manager’s USA trip, at the time stating “I’m surprised to be honest with you. I’ve scored 25 goals in the last 25 or 26 games so I can’t do any more. I would have liked a reason why I’m not in it but that’s life.” However, O’Donovan has appeared for Ireland at Under 19, Under 21 and B level.
