NY Red Bulls coach: Meara’s Ireland call-up is “stupid”

New York Red Bulls coach Hans Backe has admitted that he ordered goalkeeper Ryan Meara to turn down his call-up to the Republic of Ireland under-21s.

21 year old Meara is unsure of his international future, despite being proud of the call-up. “I don’t know, I have no idea ,” Meara said after being questioned where the call-up came from. “I guess they kind of watched the first bunch of games, followed me I guess. They wanted me to come in. It’s something I hadn’t even thought about. I’m so focused on the here and now with the Red Bulls. It wasn’t something I was thinking about.”

However, club coach Hans Backe told BigAppleSoccer that Meara was not allowed to travel to Ireland and miss almost two weeks of Red Bull soccer. “I just told him we will turn it down,” Backe said. He wants to play. I don’t want [him to], so that’s why.”

Backe revealed that he had spoken to Meara about the call-up, but would not elaborate further on why he held the youngster back. “It’s stupid. I’m not commenting on it,” Backe said.

Not willing to upset his club boss, and perhaps lose his starting position at the Major League Soccer club, Meara is listening to his coach’s orders. “We talked about it. He obviously has a lot more experience in this game then I do,” Meara said.

“Just seeing players go through this and he thinks it’s better for me to stay here and keep focusing on doing well, getting games on the Red Bulls. I’m focused on here and getting ready for Saturday.”
