Paul Green called up to Ireland Euro 2012 squad to replace Keith Fahey

Former Derby County midfielder Paul Green has been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2012 as Keith Fahey has failed to recover from a groin strain.

Green, who is without a club after turning down a new contract offer with Derby County, has been called in as a direct central midfield replacement for Birmingham City’s Keith Fahey. The 29-year-old Blues midfielder has been out of action since the end of April, missing Birmingham’s Championship playoff campaign.

29-year-old Green started the first two Euro 2012 qualifiers and has 10 Irish caps. He also scored his first goal in his second appearance under Giovanni Trapattoni in a friendly against Algeria in May 2010. Fahey had not been expected to start for Ireland at the European Championships, but offered a strong backup option in the middle and out wide. Green, on the other hand, is a limited central midfielder, but has put in some decent performances for the Rams in the Championship, and has been linked with Leeds United.

Sickened. He is a dreadful player and a downright liability. It’s a disgrace that he keeps getting called up after his performances in qualifying. Really mindboggling how this ***** is called up ahead of the likes of Hoolahan, Wilson, Clark and Ireland.

Even young Jeff Hendrick at Derby would be a better option.

I just sincerely hope that Whelan, Andrews and Gibson stay fit.

F***in thought I had seen the last of this ******* after he did his cruciate. I hope he gets another one.

    Unhappy is an understatement.

Sorry about those 1 or 2 ignorant remarks, made in the heat of the moment.

Green is an atrocious liability and a mercenary though.

    Sickened..

There has to be better options to call up then Paul Green? He has had he’s chance, remember him against Russia in 2010? Very poor player|

This news has totally sapped all the energy and exitement out of me. It is a total buzzkiller.

I think it’s going to take me until the Hungary game to cheer up, as long as Green remains rooted to the bench and everyone stays fit.

Fully with you on this one Prop. Green is muck.

You know that feeling you get when you’re called to the Principal’s office?

That feeling you get when your girlfriend tells you “We need to talk.”?

That feeling you get when the guards come to your house?

That feeling you get when you are punched in the stomach?

That’s the feeling I have after hearing about Green’s call up.

Seriously, I’m thinking about going on hunger strike until Green is taken out of the squad.

This is a disgrace. I just got back from Indian and I’m about to lose my vindaloo all over the keyboard. I knew this was going to happen. Maybe he’ll come on and score the winner against Spain or something. This had put a dampner on todays result. Stubborn old Trap..

I see the idiots on foot.ie are still set on a Keane/Walters partnership based on 1 game.

Long or Doyle could score a hat-trick against Spain and find a cure for aids and the rocket scientists on foot.ie would still compare Jonny Walters to Maradona and Pele.

“Ah sure he couldn’t score if the goalkeeper and defenders were blindfolded but still!”

    Unbelievable….

I really thought that Doyle’s performance in the 1st half and Long’s goal would make people come around but it’s still the same verbal diarrea coming out of them.

Did Stephen Hunt throw a hissyfit because he wasn’t brought on? I wouldn’t have him in the squad if he is going to have an attitude like that. I would send him home. There are plenty of other players who would be glad just to be there.

Ugh…gutted for Fahey. He’s a classy player that deserved a chance to play in the finals.

this is a disgrace and a mokery to our ntion hes not only is he not bloody irish but hes not good enough.what justifys his selection?hes been injured most the season, has played right back and has been atrocious when given the chance and cost us against russia.maby when clark and hoolahans form dips theyl get their chance its just proof trap dosn watch games and dosnt give a flying #### about the fans in the slightest

  • Ace said:

ciaran clark has long since declared his allegiance to ireland and is capable of playing anywhere along the back 4 and cm at a premier league level. These are the two areas we have injury trouble with and yet somehow mcshane and green get a look in before this rising talent. This is absoluteltly rediculous.Id even much rather see even steven reid Back in the squad as a cm or rb cover even tho he hasnt played cm for well over a year.

It is completely illogical and dangerous that Green got a call up.

We just better pray that he doesn’t see any game time because if he does, we are f**ked and I wish I was exaggerating.

  • Propagandhi said:

I hope Gibson stays fit or Martin Rowlands will be getting a call up.

  • Fionn said:

Your bench should be filled with impact players, Long or Doyle depending who plays is an impact sub, McClean is an impact sub, Fahey would have been one, what frigging use has Green, just cause he scored a shitty headed goal(against Algeria?) that he knocked himself out doing? God.

  • Ronan said:

Ah yeah but Green is on form.. He scored a few goals in his back garden

  • Propagandhi said:

Green is the same kind of player as Whelan, Andrews and Gibson except he is infinitely worse.

Is it too much to ask for to have a little variety? Clark, Hoolahan and Ireland all offer something different.

If you are going to call up a Whelan or Andrews clone, you might as well call up Stephen McPhail. Much better and more experienced player than Paul Green.
