Crystal Palace defender Paul McShane has been drafted into the Republic of Ireland squad to face Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday at the Aviva Stadium.
McShane’s inclusion is believed to be as only temporary cover for the friendly international, as John O’Shea, Richard Dunne, Sean St. Ledger, and Kevin Foley are all sidelined with minor injuries. Marco Tardelli admitted that McShane was being called up for the match, but that the management team hope the four defenders will recover fully before Ireland travel to their pre-Euro 2012 training camp in Italy.
Shay Given, Keith Andrews, Keith Fahey, and Robbie Keane are also doubts for Saturday’s friendly.

Please…………….no..!
@IrishRI
OK your comment did make chuckle a little but Im a bit sick of McShane getting hammered by our fans.
He’s still relatively young but I for one think he’s much better a player than most fans think he is. I can think of at least 3 regular first team players who shouldn’t even be on the b team list if we ever had our ideal line up of players who are eligible for us.
Marc Wilson, Ciaran Clark, Shane Duffy are three who would offer far more than McShane.
im sorry he is a huge liability and i will be praying he does not make it on the plane to poland
‘Shat Given’? Bit harsh…
Duffy is a great prospect but way too inexperienced and lacking in first team action at Everton. Moyes played Duffy a few times here and there and Duffy always played well but for some crazy reason Moyes never played him anywhere enough. Marc Wilson, Ciaran Clark are very solid players, Clarke particularly.
While we’re on about players who should be going how about these. Wes Hoolanhan, Ian Harte, Paddy Kenny, Andy Reid. Stephen Ireland (if he hadn’t screwed things up so much) and how about Stokes from Celtic?!?! A wildcard like Robbie Brady even, but we’re well covered on the flanks so that would have been a really wild card.
Anyhow I stand by what I said re McShane, he does have lapses concentration wise but St Ledger and Ward don’t?
Not saying McShane is a first team player just that he’s not the worst squad back up otion.
ye he is a liabillity and only in there on merit and not abillity because hes a big heart pffffff and ye clark wilson and duffey must be kicking themselves wondering how this donkey has been drafted in.bar his debut hes not only been a disaster waiting to happen but a nervous wreck at the back.his ball control is so poor for a proffesional footballer and his anticipation is disasterous.not only that but hes played the bear minimum of 1st team football the past 2 years and after being sent on loan 2 palace 4 more 1st team action he sat on the bench where he belongs.this guy wudn look out of place in league 2 so what warants him to be an international player ahead of consistant and in my opinion realy quality players like clark and wilson.you need more then pride a big heart and effort 2 play international football you need quality and abillity to go with it.hes had 6 years to prove himself and hes been consistantly rubish.ian harte has had 16 years and is just as proud an irshman and a quality player but he hasnt had a look in under trap.just makes zero sense
When I saw O’Shea get injured and McShane come on against France in Paris I knew the game was lost. I said as much to my girl. I got that sicking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I was proved right when he was at fault of the goal. He let Henry get goal side of him instead of getting in front of him and shielding the ball out or at least shouldering the fecker off the ball. There’s a reason he was voted worst premier league players ever in some poll I read a while back. Clark should be called up not him.
Good job we have Given, Dunne, O’Shea…but theyre a couple of donkeys playing regularly in the 1st team if you ask me…at least Paul Green isnt getting many games these days
McShane does ok when he plays in goal for Bolton but as a outfield defender he’s terrible.
IrishRI i had that same feeling when mcshane came on in paris. Now it looks like trap is at least bringin mcshane in for the hungary game and possibly even to poland. Usually i keep my mouth shut when trap makes bizarre decisions but bringing in mcshane over clark, wilson or even duffy is absolute maddness. This guy is one of worst premier league players i have ever seen (he is also out of place in the championship) and he belongs no where near a major tournament.
I had a feeling that someway, somehow, at some time McShane and even Green would weasel their way onto the plane. If Trap called me up I’d have to say sorry, I’m not good enough to play for Ireland and if McShane had any patriotism he would do the same.
That’s an absurb statement IrishRI – players who decide that they can do without the hassle of international football are being unpatriotic, not the ones who will always turn up and give their best, regardless of ability. I remember people making the same crap comments about Kilbane, saying he should retire to let somebody else take his place. I don’t think Macca merits a position in the squad given his track record of errors and the fact that he doesn’t seem to have played much club football lately, but it’s Trapattoni’s call whether he plays or not, it’s not up to the player to sacrifice his position.
There is something about him that gets my blood boiling. Maybe it’s his orange mop of hair bouncing all over the place. I don’t know.
Pretty asinine stuff calling up McShane. Wilson, Clark, Duffy, Delaney and McCarthy have all played much more first team football this season, at a higher level yet he calls up McShane. The problem with McShane is that he can play a stormer in one game and then follow that up with 4 consecutive terrible performances. He is way too mistake prone and doesn’t have the concentration, confidence, focus or basic ability to play at this level.
I am also scratching my head as to why he didn’t call up McShane AND Delaney. If 1 or 2 defenders get injured against Bosnia, we’ll have to play Cox and Hunt in defence.
Sadly another waste of a friendly.
