Three Irishmen named in PFA SPL Team of the Year 2011-12
Motherwell goalkeeper Darron Randolph and Dundee United duo Gavin Gunning and Jon Daly have been named in the PFA Scotland SPL Team of the Year for the 2011-12 season.
24-year-old Motherwell keeper Randolph has been one of the main reasons for the side’s success this season, helping the Steelmen to third in the table and a Champions League spot for next year. “It’s an honour to be named in a team selected by my fellow professionals,” Randolph told the club’s official website yesterday. “It has been an unbelievable season at Fir Park and this is a great way to round it off. I should also pay tribute to the rest of the lads in the squad; it has been a collective effort from everyone at the club.”
Five Dundee United players were named in the eleven man side, including Republic of Ireland under-21 defender Gavin Gunning and the Tangerines’ top scorer Jon Daly. The forward has 21 goals in all competitions, with 18 in the Scottish Premier League, just one behind Celtic’s Gary Hooper.
Dundee United manager Peter Houston spoke of his pride at having Gavin Gunning, Paul Dixon, Jon Daly, Johnny Russell and Gary Mackay-Steven all named in the Team of the Year. “To have five of your players named in the PFA Team of the Year is so pleasing,” Houston told the Daily Record. “I’m very proud to say the least. It’s a major achievement. Every manager likes to see their players progressing and getting deserved recognition. We already have Jon Daly nominated for the PFA Player of the Year along with Johnny Russell and Gary Mackay-Steven for the Young Player of the Year, so to now have this on top is great for the club as a whole.”
