doesn’t make for great reading
579 total successful passes for all three games!
Player rating for all three games –
Richard Dunne – 5/10 Against Russia he was like a brick wall, but in the euros he made a few costly mistakes that didn’t help the 9 soft goals we conceded. played every minute and was probably our best defender most clearances and most headed clearances shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Shay Given 3/10 Shouldn’t have played, simple as that. was an idiot to think he could play at this level with an injury. I’ve seen him save much better shots than pretty much all the goals and his distribution was very poor.
John O’Shea 4/10 played every minute and never looked at home at right back. 27/53 forward passes was in actual fact punts up the line to no one. played for sunderland at centreback but that wasn’t an option here for some reason.
Sean St. Ledger 5/10 Scored our only goal and took it very well. of the dire 8 shots on target we had in the whole tournament, he had 2 of them. but at the back he was a fragile as a defender could be. got dragged out of position on countless occasions and was at fault for some soft goals.
Stephen Ward 3/10 Played every minute and was all over the place. never stays on his feet and can’t even track a runner. playing Duff at leftback would have been a better option (as a few have stated here) really out of his depth in the tournament. a player we really need replaced if we want to progress.
Keith Andrews 6/10 with 12 shots on goal Keith was probably our most dangerous player. yes, he goes missing in midfield sometimes, and yes, gives the ball away too easily but there were short fleeting moments where he was actually ok. (am I clutching at straws?)
Glenn Whelan 3/10 played all but 10 minutes of the tournament and by the stats the defensive ball winner of the team won the ball once in the three games. dropped back into the defense far too much and left the other midfielders outnumbered and chasing shadows. He cost us goals and possession and he never wants the ball. don’t be fooled by the passing stats – he’ll get the ball, pass to someone marked, admire his shot 5yard square pass and watch his teammate struggle for another passing option. was probably our worst player and that is saying much because the competition for that is very competitive – WE SIMPLY CAN’T PLAY HIM AGAIN.
Damien Duff 5/10 – 33 and most probably going to retire – The DUFFER has been one of my favourite players for the last ten years but he didn’t really get going this tournament. most passes received shows that he wants the ball but the tactics were always against him. I feel as one of our most creative players he should have had a better tournament.
Robbie Keane 5/10 As we very rarely got the ball forward, it’s really hard to rate Keanes’ performance. Yes, he didn’t stop running but when you play 50 yard long balls to the smallest player on the pitch, you’re asking for trouble. Keane does his best work running of defenders shoulders and nipping in for a chance at goal. but the ball was so very rarely in the opposition half that he may as well have saved his energy.
Aiden McGeady 6/10 one of the best dribblers of the ball we’ve ever had has won more tackles than anyone else in the team!!! both him and Duff have obviously been told to defend more than attack – as they’re our most creative players, asking them to chase back every time we loose the ball (a lot) knackers you out and when you do finally get the chance to attack you’re so knackered you can’t really deliver a quality ball. we have so little possession against teams (even really poor teams) that I don’t think we should even bother playing technically gifted players like McGeady and Duff. If it was up to trapattoni we’d have 11 Glenn Whelen’s!
Kevin Doyle 6/10 can’t understand why he was dropped in the second game as i thought he through himself at every shit 55yard long ball and tried to make something of it. I could really see the determination in his face at the start of the Italy game but the tactics again men’t he spent more time chasing defenders than anything else. the fact that hes was replaced by Cox/Walters is an insult as the don’t have his skill.
Jonathan Walters 4/10 Did ok when he came on but still couldn’t score in a whore house.
Simon Cox 4/10 didn’t have much game time but worked really hard when he did come on. both him and Walters did better than I thought they would but they lack the skill of Doyle and Long.
Shane Long 4/10 given 40 minutes!!! are you fucking crazy??? he’s quick, strong and has an eye for goal! is miles better than pretty much all our other strikers in every department. Shameless.
James McClean n/a Would have loved to see him play against Italy and get the chance to run at players. OK OK he’s one for the future and too young… hang on, he’s playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world for an average team and still making better teams look stupid! how is he not ready???? should have had at least one game.
Paul Green n/a seriously, WTF
The zero minute club – Can’t believe Gibson and Hunt didn’t get some time.
At least he had the sense not to play McShane!!!
David Forde
Darron Gibson
Stephen Hunt
Stephen Kelly
Paul McShane
Darren O’Dea
Keiren Westwood
Let me know what you think guys, am i being too harsh?
Of the players who started thrice–Andrews was probably the best. McGeady and St. Ledger next.
Great source.. Could you tell me where you found the data? I’d like to get the data for Czech team. Thx!
Gotta agree andrews was probably our player of the tournament as he seemed like one of the few with a decent ammount of fight in him
Stephen “Psychiatric” Ward’s contribution to the Ireland’s Euro finals
Croatia’s 1st goal. Failed to clear and then not only allowed Srna to get the cross in but actually helped it on to Mandzukic via a deflection off his back.
Croatia’s 2nd goal. Sliced a clearence right into the path of Jelavic thus providing the perfect assist.
Croatia’s 3rd goal. Was one of a group of Irish defender who failed to mark Mandzukic’s allowing him a free header in the box.
Spain’s 1st goal. Got caught flat footed and well basically aloowed Torres just to walk past him to score.
Spain’s 2nd goal. Didn’t even put a tackle in or attempt to block the shot allowing Villa just to trickle the ball into the net.
Spain’s 3rd goal. Played Torres onside when the other defenders had stepped up. Then from an even start allowed Torres to race away from him to score.
Not blaming Ward for our exit. Just showing how one weak link in the team can spell disaster and we have many weak links.

Thanks a lot!
ok lets just put this terrible tournament behind us and look ford to wc 2014 qualifiers we have a realistic chance of qualifying trap stuck with the players that got him there now its time for him to start a new team for the new campaign he can start by blooding some new players against serbia in august the only players i would have in the squad form the euros in given,o’shea dunne, mcgeady, keane i think ward needs to go he had a horrific euros probably are wrose playet in my opinion hes a weak link and hes more then likely going to be in the championship this season its time to bring in marc wilson who had a good season with stoke at left back and hes still quiet young only 24 he can only improve and hes much better defensively then ward i would reather greg cunningham or aidy white play instead of ward andrews needs to go tbh i no he was are best player of the euros(which isn’t saying much) but hes 31 and acording to newspapers today hes joing bolton who are in the chapionship mcCarthy, gibson, hoolahan, ireland, hendrick are all better then andrews i would weather one of them in the middle of the park i think duffer should retire again age 33 and injuries i would like to see mcclean coleman or even brady on the wing with mcgeady then duffer doyle should also be drop and replaced by long who was irelands top goal soccer in the 11/12 season 31 appearances 9 goals and 1 assist and he wins almost every ball in the air hes a all round better player then doyle hes stronger faster younger and a better finishers then doyle he probably would of got double figures last season if it wasn’t for hutton and a minor heart scare. i think this team should be tested against serbia given, wilson, dunne(c),clark,o’shea, mccgeady,mcCarthy, gibson, mcclean, long, keane i would love to see coleman make the bench also its hard to fit all of the good young players in we could make two teams and shane duffy could break ture evertons first team this year and samir carruthers derick williams and burke could make it at villa to its going to be interesting next season theres so many young promising irish players on the brink of breaking into there first teams brady, cunningham, hendrick, clifford,o’brein, murray, hoban, carruthers, williams, burke, stevens, forde, ect
No doubt our team for the WC will be more or less the same as that for the Euros.
I know people are going on about Andrews as the best Irish performer in Euro2012 but I have to say I thought he was very poor and only did anything with any purpose for the final maybe 15 minutes of each game. In any case it’s easy to look good when you’re competition is Glen Whelan. I thought McGeady was our best player but he was stiffled by team tactics and the fact that with every cross he had to place the ball on a team-mates head or foot – if he didn’t they would lose it and he was chasing back! O’Shea was brutal but our defence generally played well below that of which they are capable. Perhaps O’Shea on the left with Foley (or S. Kelly) on the right would have been better?
Ireland to return to marshall the midfield for WC2014?
http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11740/7836626/Scannell-joins-Town
Sean Scannell joins Huddersfield.
Stephen Hunt, Darron Gibson, James McClean and Richard Dunne among the players furious with Trapattoni.
Gibson is said to be considering his international future. I’m sure Wilson is too.
Trapattoni should do the honourable thing and leave. Who in the right mind would stay after a tournament like that? 1 win in 7 since the Estonia win and that was due to a Shane Long winner. Guess where he was in the pecking order for strikers? 5th. Robbie Keane played crap and Kevin Doyle played good. So he drops Doyle and replaces him with…… Cox.
There is going to be a lot of ill will if Trapattoni stays in this job. If he keeps sending out the same team in the same formation and continues to neglect players and ostricise them, things will get real ugly, real soon.
Does a 74 year old man really want to spend the last few years of his life being castigated? Because I know that if Ireland drop points against Sweden, Austria and Germany, I will give him a piece of my mind and I hope others will too.
Crappatoni HAS to go!!!!!!!!
Every tactical move he made was retarded, overly defensive. If we are to progress at all -in what is a very tough world cup qualifying group – then we need fresh ideas from someone who wants to take us in a new direction. We have quality but crapp trapp keeps telling everyone how poor we are.
Every game is the same under this buffoon. Contain the opposition and then in the rare event of us getting the ball the only option seems to be “give it a hoof” in the hope that a forward latches onto it.
We were completely humiliated at the Euros and I’d rather we hadn’t even qualified, can’t believe I said that but I did!
HE HAS TO GO!!!!!!!!! But he won’t as there’s too much cash in it for him.
@mikeeire, could not agree more with you.
@jjohnny…… i know your trying to be optimistic but seriously man.
@andy kelly………..totally agree wih you.
Crapatoni really should hang his head in shame and leave after that embarrasing shambles, still having nightmares over it.
Delaney will never let Crapatoni go as he is the face of this big stupid marketing scheme trying to make a worldwide franchise from this old mans face, Delaney should walk too but never gonna happen.
We really do have some really good players but they will never be picked and its heartbreaking to accept this. Why should we bother playing a player as good as mcgeady when hes just gonna defend for every entire game and never get to do what he does best. Total WASTE of talent, maybe just put St Ledger on the wing instead……..Jesus.
Paul Greene……………..disgusting, still dont get it.
I understand Gibson, Long, Dunne, Wilson (to name only a small few) being so angry with this old man, why should they bother turning up when they are never gonna get a game.
Crapatoni just wants 10 glen whelans and given, cant watch whats gonna happen in the WC qualifiers, very probably the beginning of the end, were gonna end up like northern ireland in the depths of sh1tness…………………SIGH.
Sick of Crapatoni going on about how bad our players are when its his damn system causing the problems and again, we DO have the players.
Dont argue that his system got us there, would have been better if we never got there and get humiliated on to the whole of Europe.
Where do we go from here? Anybody!!!!!!
Listening to the news today and it struck me wouldn’t it be great if Ireland had entered a team for the London Olympics. Pick a squad of U23 players and 3 overage not involved in the Euros. Ireland, Hoolahan, Wilson perhaps? We could include the likes of McCarthy, Coleman, Pilkington etc who I think are still under23 and base the rest on our current U21 squad. Maybe someone like Brian Kerr or Mick McCarthy could have managed the team. Would have been great to see a young Irish team go out and play football after the rubbish we have had to endure the last few weeks. It would also have put pressure on Trappatoni to consider some of these players.
Would have been a great opportunity with the Olympics on the players doorstep? Surprised this wasn’t debated or considered or have I missed something?
Csa, you have to qualify for the Olympics. The European representatives for this Olympics are the beat teams from last year’s u21 European Championships and Team GB as hosts. So blame Don Givens for us not getting there.
Thanks for that info Ronan. Would have made for an interesting experiment had we qualified to go. I have been selecting my imaginary squad this evening!
Crapattoni is going to be talking up how Spain and Italy got to the final for the next few months, while we are getting outplayed by Kazakhstan, hammered by Germany and Sweden and leaving proven Premier League players at home to the benefit of Football League journeymen.
If Crapattoni’s lack of faith in Ireland is so profound that he plays a 4-4-2 and if his tactical acumen is so limited that he basically tells the whole team to defend, play hoofball and win set pieces, then it would be of mutual benefit for both parties to go their separate ways.
The FAI are such screw ups..
I thought the same thing when Italy beat Germany Prop. But it’s not the losing to Italy and Spain, it’s the fact that when we played them they couldn’t believe that we qualified in the first place, the fact that we were so poor that they had tougher training ground matches and that fact that we didn’t even look like a professional outfit.
We all knew that Spain and Italy were great teams going into the competition. What they didn’t know is how poor we were under Trapattoni, how tactically clueless we were and even the underdog fighting Irish spirit was nowhere to be seen because all we did for 270 minutes was chase the ball around like idiots.
I can’t believe the high opinion of himself that Crapattoni has. Contrast how we performed in 2002 under Mick McCarthy with how we performed this year. It’s unbelievable. McCarthy would have killed to have players like Wilson, Clark, Hoolahan, Ireland, Coleman, McClean and Stokes too. James McCarthy would probably be a regular in the first team too, which would have made his pre-tournament decision to exclude himself a lot harder.
Crapattoni has probably killed his chances of ever getting another high profile gig after us.
