Wes Hoolahan and Darron Gibson out of Ireland squad

Darron Gibson and his replacement Wes Hoolahan have both pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad to face Serbia with injuries.

Gibson was forced off after just 19 minutes for Everton against AEK Athens in midweek with a thigh muscle tear, and faces a few weeks on the sidelines. Yesterday, Giovanni Trapattoni called up Norwich City’s Wes Hoolahan as a replacement, but the 30-year-old withdrew last night with an achilles injury.

There has been much clamour for Hoolahan’s inclusion, and the midfielder may have to wait until September’s friendly with Oman to make his second international appearance for Ireland. As of yet, Trapattoni has not called up anyone else to replace Gibson or Hoolahan.
