Good goals by Reid especially and O’Donovan today (yesterday). Good to see Stokes doing well, scoring 2 and winning a penalty against the Arabs. Maybe he’ll get a surprise start against Juve with Celtic needing at least 3 goals to progress.
Aidan White Flop of the Match
The least ineffectual of the Leeds midfield trio. Always offloaded the ball once he received it and rarely put tackles in.

Shouldn’t that be most ineffectual? Anyways, the venerated Aidan White was allegedly the poorest on show against Man City today.

Sammon doesn’t get a lot of credit but his manager and teammates know what he is about.
Pity Derby are virtually out of Playoff contention. Four Irish players are integral members of their first team and it seems that Hendrick is destined for a PL career one way or other (touch wood).
Watford also have four Irish players in or around their first team but Mark Yeates is unwanted, despite an impressive goals and assists record, Sean Murray is firmly out of favour after an impressive start to his career and the jury is out on Connor Smith (out injured). That leaves Tommie Hoban (also out injured). They also seem to be collecting foreign players which cannot be good for the young Irish players prospects.
Hull and Crystal Palace are probably the best bet for guaranteeing more Irish involvement in the PL next season. McShane, Quinn and Meyler have plenty of PL experience and Brady speaks for himself. Paddy McCarthy faces an uncertain future at Palace, despite being their club captain, he hasn’t played all season but Delaney and Garvan (out injured) (noticing a recurring theme yet?) have both been impressive.
Joe Mason is one (possible) Irishman guaranteed PL involvement with Cardiff next season, though he has been on the periphery lately.
has anyone seen much of paddy madden?
if he can continue that scoring form through to the end of the season i think it’d be worth giving him a run out with the irish squad
Cathal: A step up to the Championship is inevitable for Madden now, whether or not Yeovil get promoted, so it’d be interesting to see if he can cut it there. He always looked promising in the LOI, so great to see him do so well with the Glovers.
Prop, White wasn’t great yesterday, but he wasn’t on his own. He was also a left back asked to play right midfield in a poor team against the Premier League Champions by a manager facing the sack.
@ Cathal If Simon Cox can get 20 caps with the Ireland team, then so can Madden.
I realize I am being a Debbie Downer, but no Irish strikers are scoring regularly at premier league or championship level at the moment. Long term, this is worrying. I do not remember a time with such a dearth of quality up front. If we are going to compete against Sweden or Austria, I guess the goals will have to come from midfield.
Glenn Whelan is the lowest scoring midfielder in the Premier League per games played and never looks remotely like scoring (or doing much of anything else for that matter). James McCarthy has scored in one game in the last two years. Aiden McGeady has probably one of the worst goalscoring records of any winger playing at this level, per games played. All of Keith Andrews goals this season have come from the penalty spot. Paul Green, I won’t go there. So, no goals coming from midfield then.
As for the strikers. Our highest scoring strikers in the D1 are Keogh, Sammon and Murphy with a mediocre 6 each, surprisingly low in the former’s case, considering the form of last season while Murphy has always had a good goalscoring record at this level for someone who plays on the wing a lot. Doyle has only 5 goals. He has only scored in 3 League games this season and hasn’t scored since last year. Cox has 4 goals.
In the Premier League, Long for the second season in a row has failed to capitalise on his early season form with the goals and possibly his fitness drying up. Walters has been abysmal as usual. Hunt was on a good run earlier in the season but he hasn’t kicked on.
Yes it is worrying.
It’s also worrying but weird more so how many Irish players are scoring less than they have in previous seasons, or in Duff and Long’s case, early in the season. Darron Gibson, Seamus Coleman, James McClean and Kevin Doyle can’t buy goals.
Watching Soccer Saturday is becoming a very predictable and depressing experience.
Well it’s the English Premier League and the top scoring current England international at the moment is Lampard with a mediocre 11 goals so I really think it’s tough to stand out with goals.
I suppose it’s really tough to be an Irish football fan at the moment seeing as we’re a bit of a laughing stock after the euros, the manager is a complete piss taker and I really can’t see a single Irish player doing well for his team this season! the best performer in my opinion being Duff and he retired what seems like ages ago, even then his season has been only OK.
Young players coming through looks unlikely to happen anytime soon and world cup qualification is simply a mathematical possibility only.
What we need is a new Roy Keane, Paul McGrath, Ronnie Whelan or Ray Houghton to show up and make us all cheer again.
Mikeire – If you’re looking for some small positives, Seamus Coleman’s doing well lately for an Everton side that are regaining their form.. Plus Marc Wilson is back from injury. And the Irish trio of Meyler, Brady and Quinn are a key part of Hull’s promotion challenge (though they seem to be wobbling a little bit in the last few games). Also we should see Pilkington in the next squad.
The striker situation is a bit grim alright.. Long has notched up one goal since I think the end of November, Walters while I admire him is never especially prolific, and Conor Sammon remains our top scorer in the Championship while scoring about 1 in 4 games which says something about the form of Doyle, Cox and Keogh. Leon Best finally came back from injury today, bit of a forgotten man in an Ireland sense but hopefully he can get things back on track. At least Keane’s season has started and he looks sharp enough, even if it’s against the likes of the Chicago Fire.
