James McCarthy joins Everton for £13 million
Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy completed a Transfer Deadline Day move from Wigan Athletic to Everton for £13 million.
The 22-year-old will link up with former manager Roberto Martinez at Goodison Park, after the Toffees sold Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United for £27 million. McCarthy will join fellow Irishmen Seamus Coleman, Shane Duffy, and Darron Gibson at the Premier League club.
Martinez also brought in midfielder Gareth Barry and striker Romelu Lukaku on loan deals for the season, as the Toffees aim to qualify for Europe.
The Glasgow-born midfielder has played 16 times for the Republic of Ireland since his debut in 2010, and has become one of Giovanni Trapattoni’s first-choice midfielders. He was given permission to arrive late for the Ireland camp to allow his deadline day move go through. McCarthy is expected to start against Sweden on Friday.
