Funny how Stephen Ireland accepted every call up, before dropping out of a squad because his partner miscarried and was consequently made enemy #1 of all the barstoolers yet someone who doesn't have an Irish bone in his body makes a solitary appearance for any of our youth teams, waits an age in football terms to declare for Ireland and then turn down call up after call up for the most frivolous of reasons and nobody bats an eyelid.

And for the last time. Stephen Ireland may be an absolute imbecile and handled the whole situation like an imbecile but well.... what would you expect an imbecile to do? He was also a kid when it happened and he had way too much way too young, in terms of his personal life as well as professional one.

Now, I don't believe Ireland merits a place in the squad on merit but the door shouldn't be closed on him just because Lambert made him, Stevens and Given scapegoats at various points in the season.

Sadly we have a manager who has made no attempt to coax Ireland back in to the set up, who has called up our best PL midfielder Hoolahan out of pressure from the FAI only to leave him on the bench (I believe he still hasn't started a game), despite impressing in every brief cameo he has made and who shunned another talented midfielder in Andy Reid because of his incompetence, mismanagement and being completely out of touch with modern football/ers.

I wouldn't have a problem with this if it wasn't for the last minute goal conceded against Austria because of his tactics/player selection, the points we have dropped because of his tactics/player selections..

I suppose it all depends on perspective. Some people think Trapattoni is a God who cannot be challenged on his ineptness because he won lots of trophies 20 years ago and because he got us to the European Championships, where we proceeded to get embarrassed in every game because of his tactics/player selections.

It is really hard to take that it took as long as it did to start playing Wilson, Coleman and McCarthy. It's hard to take that we are the only country that plays 4-4-2. It's hard to take that our most talented player is in his peak years and hasn't started a game for his country but some English League One standard player Simon Cox has already played in 25 odd games.

And you have idiots lambasting Conor Sammon after his performance against Austria and an out of position Andy Keogh and praising the similarly mediocre Jon Walters and Simon Cox to the heavens for their similarly medicore performances.

Cox coming on against Croatia in the European Championships was one of the biggest blunders any Ireland manager has made considering how it backfired spectacularly and the implications it had on our tournament beginning before it started.

The game was still there to be won or drawn and the idiot brings on a a League One standard striker to play on the wing instead of Coleman, McClean, Hoolahan (not even there) or even f*cking Stephen Hunt......

Wish Trapattoni would f*ck off and stop ruining my enjoyment of football.

Arrgghhh, I bought tickets for this bloody game. Really wanted to see Pilkington. I think he'll still play for Ireland but probably not under Trapp. Pilkington and Hoolahan really play very well together in the Prem. very frustrating.

I am really put off watching another game with Trap as manager but I really can't resist the chance to beat England, and at Wembley too.

C'mon Ireland!!!!

Stephen Hunt has offers from German teams according to The Sunday Times.
Noel Hunt is a free agent and linked with Brighton.
Gary Dicker and Marcos Painter have been released by Brighton.
Marc Tierney and Conor Wilkinson have signed for Bolton.
Alan Judge has resigned for Blackburn.
Kevin Doyle will have to take a huge paycut to leave Wolves.
Jon Daly has rejected a new contract with Dundee Utd and offers from Hibernian and abroad to sign with Scottish 3rd division club Rangers.
Peter Murphy is heavily linked with Kilmarnock after being released by Carlisle, which is an indictment of the SPL.
Seamus Coleman is, rather ambitiously, being linked with Man Utd by a few disreputable sources.
Stephen McPhail has been released by Cardiff and has a few irons in the fire.
Colin Doyle has signed a new deal with Birmingham so he can be a benchwarmer for another few years.
Andy Reid has signed a new deal with Nottingham Forest.

Predictably, Anthony Pilkington has dropped out of the squad, citing "injury".

I'm beginning to think, going by past events, that Trapattoni knew Pilkington would drop out, hence his empty promises to experiment and the predictable set up that will be employed at Wembley.

I feel sorry for Wes Hoolahan, who would do anything to play for the country that he was born and bred in.

In the cellar of a mock-Tudor mansion in the commuter belt of a small city in the West Midlands, Walters, Pilkington, Hoban, and Grealish gather. They join hands, stand in a circle around a crudely-etched pentagram and in low voices begin to incant their dark prayer

"Wellingtonmus, Wildemus, Wilde Geesemus, Spike Milliganmus, Peter O'Toolemus..."

Their voices rise as one. From the shadows steps a fifth man, who begins to interject with a melodic counterpoint. He sings in a high-pitched wail. The man is Terry Phelan.

"Paul McGrathmus (...in Ealing..), David O'Learymus (...but formative years...), Andy Townsendmus (...Euro 88 in a bar...), Cascarinomus (...legitimate Iceycreamo...), Mark Lawrensonmus (...aaaahhhhh...)

The song goes on and on...

"Sean Murraymus (...hajulellah...), Jack Crowley (...riatsila...)..."

A flame erupts from the centre of the pentagram. Jon Walter's features are illuminated. Face contorted, his eyes dance with orgiastic glee.

Time races. The night comes and passes.

The next morning, Gary Dicker is released from his contract with Brighton and Hove Albion.

I can't help but think that Pilkington is making himself available for just the England game so he can put himself in the shop window for England.

On the flipside, you are playing someone days before his marriage, who may not want to put himself about in case he gets a facial/injury.

I wouldn't see the point in raking in a load of peripheral players as people are suggesting, just to train with the squad and maybe get 10 minutes on the pitch.. The underage sides are the place to test out promising talent that hasn't quite made the grade yet, not the senior squad. We already have a bunch of players in there who are much closer to the first eleven (Hoolahan, Brady, Hendrick, Meyler etc) who have only a handful of caps between them and need a run of full games.

Even if you look at the first choice starting lineup, it's very short on international experience - David Forde - 6 caps, Marc Wilson - 5 caps, Seamus Coleman - 11 caps, James McCarthy - 12 caps, James McClean - 6 caps.. These are the players we'll be depending on to beat Sweden and Austria in a few months. Now it's largely Trap's fault that they weren't given more games sooner but now is the opportunity to fix it and give the new core of the team a run of 3-4 games to 'gel'. A debut for Pilkington at last would also be a bonus.

I'm all for looking at fresh talent from the LOI permitting that they have the fitness levels to compete, which has been an issue before. Forrester looks like he has talent, but could also do with putting on a pound of muscle. Personally, I don't think Towell is anywhere close to an international squad as things stand. Maybe more experience will make him a better player, but he was the weak link in the u21 campaign from last year, and that was a team that included a host of players (Henderson, Clifford, O'Kane, Doran) who nobody would like to see in a senior squad right now.
